How To Season Your Cast Iron Cookware

Whether you are a first-time cast iron seasoner or a seasoned seasoner. Seasoning your cast iron cookware is easy and effective. Here is how to season your cast iron:

  1. Gather supplies. Lower two oven racks to the bottom position in your oven. Preheat oven to 450°F.
  2. Prep the Pan. Scrub the cookware with warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
  3.  Coat for seasoning. Use a clean cloth or paper towel to apply a thin layer of cooking oil* to the cookware (inside and out). If you use too much oil, your cookware may become sticky.
  4. Bake the pot/pan. Place the cookware in the oven upside down for 1 hour; leave in oven to cool. Place a large baking sheet or aluminum foil on the bottom rack to catch any drippings.

PRO TIP: Seasoned cookware is smooth, shiny, and nonstick. You'll know it's time to re-season if food sticks to the surface or if the skillet appears dull.

* All cooking oils and fats can be used for seasoning your cast iron, but we suggest using an oil with a high smoke point. Based on availability, affordability, and effectiveness try using grapeseed oil, avocado oil, melted shortening, or vegetable oil.
